The 2012 American Birkebeiner -
I chose
to do this piece on the Birkebeiner because it was an internationally recognized
event that happens once a year right here in Northwestern Wisconsin.
People from all over the country and world come to participate and witness the
event, so it was definitely newsworthy. This audio and video news
package sample that covered the history of the event, as well as facts about
the race and what it is all about. This work sample is a great demonstration of my video production and editing skills. It was a great story for both natural sound and great video from the race and the surrounding events. The interviewees were a perfect fit to show how dedicated people are to the Birkebeiner and the city of Hayward, Wisconsin. The Birkebeiner story was one of my favorite pieces as it had a great mix of audio and video elements.
The Chippewa Falls Demolition Project -
I chose to do this piece on the Chippewa demolition because it happened right here in the Chippewa Valley. Many people from Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls could have been and were affected by this building coming down, so it was newsworthy, timely and relevant to the community. As another audio and video news package, this work displayed angles from the city planner, an affected individual/tenant. The story was a well rounded demonstration of a news package, with a variety of video. One thing this story taight me was to be more conversational in my approach and practice writing and speaking in this manner when creating a news package.
The Live Action Role Play Audio Story -
This
"LARP" piece was one of my favorites for many reasons. It was my first and only audio podcast for Inside Eau Claire, but it turned out to be an organized, fully triangulated piece.
The pictures I took were great because they fit the story well and showed the
men in action. I also had an example of the equipment used and how they
constructed the gear. Not only did I get to participate in the action, but i witnessed the role play first hand and got inside the LARP world. I also did sit down interviews with the originators of the Eau Claire group "Shire of Ice Haven" to get their perspective. It was an excellent opportunity to get a chance to hear from people who don't understand the hobby and to inform the public of this growing phenomenon.
